What is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is used to fill a gap created by one or more missing teeth. The bridge is mounted onto existing teeth or implants and cemented into shape to provide stability and strength, effectively “bridging” the gap to create an attractive, natural smile.
Dental bridges help maintain face shape, restore chewing and speaking ability, and prevent teeth from moving out of position. If you have a couple of missing teeth that makes you feel self-conscious, a dental bridge will fill these gaps and give you a reason to smile again.
What Types of Dental Bridges are Available?Traditional Bridges
The traditional fixed bridge is the most widely used bridge. Typically consisting of porcelain fused to metal, traditional bridges feature two dental crowns that are placed over two abutment teeth. The two crowns act like anchors, allowing the artificial teeth to fill in the gap created by missing teeth.Cantilever Bridges
Cantilever bridges are typically recommended when there are not sufficient teeth on either side of the gap to help create the “bridge”. While a traditional fixed bridge supports the artificial tooth from both sides, a cantilever bridge supports the artificial tooth from just one side. Two crowns are used to create the bridge, the abutment crowns are placed next to each other, with the artificial tooth at one end. If minimal support is required to support the artificial tooth, only one crown may be needed. A cantilever bridge is often used in the back of the mouth where it is unable to exert force on other teeth which could possibly damage them.Resin-Bonded Bridges or Maryland Bridges
Maryland bonded bridges are often used to replace missing teeth in the front of the mouth. This type of bridge consists of one artificial tooth bonded to a set of metal wings. These wings are affixed to existing teeth located on either side of the missing tooth to hold it in place.
What is the Procedure for a Dental Bridge?1
Your prosthodontist will prepare the teeth adjacent to the gap for treatment. The dentist may reshape these teeth to allow room for the bridge to be placed over them.
Impressions of your teeth will be made and sent to a dental lab to create your dental bridge.
You will receive a temporary bridge to wear until your permanent bridge is complete.
Your permanent dental bridge will be installed to ensure a proper fit and complete comfort.
